The social problems created by the Industrial Revolution took people by surprise. The creation of factories in cities brought many new people into urban areas. No one had anywhere to go so the growth of slums during this time expanded rapidly. The housing was basic and cramped and lacked most amenities people had grown accustomed to. Life was drastically changed during the industrial revolution. People were living in germ infested, crowded and very unhealthy conditions, much like their place of work. Children and women laboured in harsh conditions, working long hours with little pay.
