The Population Boom!
Throughout the industrial revolution, the populations rose at a fast rate, as seen in the graphic above. One main reason for this increase was the availability of jobs. As the demand for goods increased, so did the number of jobs at factories. Since more people were being paid, whether or not it was sustainable, people were able to create livelihoods, and create a family. The creations of families then led to the creations of cities, which at the time were filled with people, and were very unsanitary. A second reason for the increase in population was that medicine improved. Since there was such an increase in medicine, the death rate decreased, and the average age of adults increased. Because of the increase in births and the decrease in deaths, the population boom was born.
So if death rates were lowering and birth rates were raising, how did cities maintain an equilibrium, or a sustainable amount of people? Well, the answer to that is, they didn't. During the industrial revolution, cities became over-packed, and very unsanitary. This is due to the excess amount of people, and the number of people searching for work in cities at factories, or other industry related jobs.
The population boom effects us today in many ways. One being that our population is still on the rise, and shows no sign of slowing down, so the spark in population an be credited to the industrial revolution. Also, since the population is increasing, so is the economy, due to the increasing amount of goods purchased. However, not everything about the population boom was positive. Since there was a large number of people living in cities and working at factories, pollution increased, causing ozone and resource depletion that still effects us today (see Pollution and Lasting Effects).
